Symbolism in Victorian Funeral Art

Have you ever wondered what a carved Angel is saying to us ? or asked  What does a Celtic cross signify ?

Undercliffe Cemetery  hosts two tours , morning and afternoon which will provide a glimpse into the symbolism of the motifs and carvings that adorn the Victorian memorials.

The tours are led by Marjorie Hopkinson, who has researched and planned the trail, and provides  a fascinating insight into the Victorian culture of mourning and remembrance from 1854 onwards. The twenty six acres of Undercliffe Cemetery houses a wonderful repository of the stone-masons art set amidst the original design and layout by William Gay, the very first Registrar.
