Talks and Tours
The Charity organises guided tours of the Cemetery for groups, societies and schools by arrangement.
A typical tour for an adult group will start at the Lodge and take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The tour follows a system of well established hard and grassed paths and most areas are accessible to wheelchair users. We ask for a donation of £3.00 per person.
The tour includes a talk on the history and heritage of Undercliffe Cemetery, information on the design principles behind the layout of the site, a look at the 6 monuments listed by English Heritage, a visit to some of the most prominent graves and to some special areas such as the Quaker burial area and the Historic Core. The tour finishes at the Smith Monument which looks out over one of the most panoramic and breathtaking views across the city of Bradford and out along the Aire Valley.
School visits can be tailored to the times and needs of the class. A typical session involves a 30 minute guided tour followed by a period of self-organised activities e.g. sketching, photography, recording information from monuments, looking at symbolism.
If you would like to focus on a particular theme for your visit we may be able to help. Themes incorporated during the past 12 months have included: textile industry in 19th Century Bradford, child mortality in Victorian Britain, employment and professions in times past, conflicts and war graves represented at Undercliffe.
