Undercliffe Cemetery Open Day
Saturday 7 July 2012, 12 noon - 4.00 pm

Help us to celebrate and experience one of Bradford’s most unique and mysterious secret spaces…

Following the success of our Open Day last year we are holding another event this year.

The main focus of the Open Day will be on arts based activities and we will have both an artist in residence and a writer in residence on site for the day.

Other activities will include: guided tours, wildlife walk, grave location search, café on the prom, showing of film “Rest in Peace”, music and much more.

We also want to use the day to consult with local people and everyone who uses the cemetery on what you think we should be doing and on thoughts and plans for the future.

Further details will be posted as the programme begins to firm up.

Undercliffe Cemetery welcomes you...

The trustees, staff, volunteers and members of Undercliffe Cemetery Charity welcome you to the website of Yorkshire’s historic Undercliffe Cemetery situated close to Bradford city centre.

Undercliffe Cemetery was opened in 1854, contains 23,000 graves and holds a total of 124,000 burials. The Cemetery offers unrivalled opportunities to appreciate the finest examples of Victorian funerary art set within the original design of this 26 acre parkland.  Undercliffe offers good vantage points and fine panoramic views across the city of Bradford and out over the Aire Valley.

On a recent Radio 4 documentary Dr. Julien Litten, a noted authority on funerary history places Undercliffe at the zenith of British cemeteries.  He calls it an enigmatic place which evokes awe, mystery and wonder.

The Cemetery is now managed by Undercliffe Cemetery Charity in partnership with Bradford Metropolitan District Council and our work includes:

  • Heritage - conservation and research
  • Education -  activities including themed tours with schools, colleges, community
  • Restoration – access to neglected areas and grounds maintenance
  • Ecology – planting, horticultural work and environmental projects
  • Burials: Undercliffe is still a working cemetery and our website includes further details of burials, memorials and plots.

As well as being a unique heritage site Undercliffe Cemetery offers an important parkland space for local people and visitors, which includes good wildlife habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna.
